Abdallah Abu-Habib: The Man who Switched Sides
By: Elias Bejjani

November 6/2004

In the age of chameleons and the reign of disloyalty, wickedness and corruptness, personal interests override the public good and material gain takes precedence over values and principles. So it is not surprising to see individuals switching sides and beliefs. Case in point, a former defender of dignity, freedom, and the Human Rights Charter has become a black market dealer in the conspiracy of enslavement and occupation. From a bearer of the banner of truth and rights he's become a robot-for-hire in the cattle trade.

May Sheik Bashir's soul rest in peace, he who gave himself on the altar of the country, and with him all our heroes without whose sacrifice there would not be a country, a cause or dignity.

Sheik Bashir would turn in to his grave if he knew that some of his former comrades have not kept the promise, and instead have sold their souls and country for a few dollars. What would he think of those who failed their country when it needed them most, when it has fallen prey to the wolves, and when its sacred soil have been defiled by the thieves and priests of doom.

How will these apostates who drifted from the path of Bashir justify their evil deeds on judgment day? They who crawled in the dead of night like thieves to abandon the camp of the honorable heroes for that of the hordes of Hulaku and Genghis Khan in search for profit, money and position? Don't they know by doing that, they desecrate the cause and betray their promise to defend the land and the people?

But man harvests what man sows, and those who sow the wind will harvest the storm. Those who betrayed the trust placed in their hands will stand to account, fairly but severely, and if not in this world, then in the next one on harvest day. The Lord said, “Do not judge, lest you be judged”, and so we should not judge others because they are responsible for their actions and they will have to account for them. But it is our right as free Lebanese, be residents of occupied Lebanon, displaced, or exiled to warn others of the potential harm that could be caused by those who abandoned the cause and went to the other side. We should expose their practices, their movements, and the contacts they have so that they can no longer hide behind their past, which they have emptied of any ethical or moral content, and so that innocent people do not fall in their traps.

The Lebanese Diaspora and their friends in the United States and around the world have to be aware that the former Ambassador Abdallah Abu-Habib who was an activist and defender of the freedom, sovereignty and independence of Lebanon, and who worked alongside the sovereignist groups to remove the shackles of the Syrian occupation and their Lebanese puppets, has now switched sides. He is now, and has been for a while, working as an adviser to Mr. Issam Fares. Mr. Fares is one of the prominent figures in the Syrian-appointed Lebanese regime whose mission is to dismantle Lebanon's independence, oppress, impoverish and displace our people, kill their morale and violate their rights, disfigure their history and annihilate their identity, and empty the homeland from all its values so it becomes one of the backward provinces of Syria.

We also wish to point out to the following facts:
*Mr. Abu-Habib has worked assiduously as an adviser to Mr. Fares to block the Syria Accountability and Lebanese Sovereignty Act, using a network of contacts and friends he made in the USA while an ambassador of Lebanon in the 1980s, when he was a member of the Lebanese American lobby in the team resisting the Syrian occupation.

*Mr. Abu-Habib accompanied the millionaire Issam Fares, heir apparent to the dummy sitting in Baabda, to the US recently where they were charged by the Syrian ruler with the mission of convincing the UN and the decision-making centers in the US of the necessity of maintaining the Syrian occupation of Lebanon, extending the term of Lahoud, blocking the implementation of UNSCR 1559 that calls for ending the rule of the fundamentalist militias and Mafia organizations. Mr. Abu-Habib was apparently very active on many fronts but, as we all know, he and his master went back home utterly disappointed.

*The rulers in Beirut decided last month to set up a committee based in the United States and endowed with a particularly generous budget, and whose job is to monitor the members of the Lebanese pro-sovereignty lobbies and block their work. It would not be surprising if Mr. Abu-Habib occupies a prominent seat on that committee.

We urge our friends and people in the US and Canada and all over the Diaspora to beware of Mr. Abu-Habib and his activities. With all our respect for his past when he was a friend of Lebanon, Mr. Abu-Habib is no longer the same person. He is working today with the enemies of Lebanon as an adviser of Issam Fares.

God Bless Lebanon
