Bible Quotations For Today
You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ which is translated Peter, The Rock
Holy Gospel of Jesus Christ according to Saint John 01/35-42/:"The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, ‘Look, here is the Lamb of God! ’The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus.
When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi’ (which translated means Teacher), ‘where are you staying?’He said to them, ‘Come and see.’ They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, ‘You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas’ (which is translated Peter).

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;

persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. Second Letter to the Corinthians 04/05-15/:'For we do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus’ sake. For it is the God who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness’, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. But just as we have the same spirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture ‘I believed, and so I spoke’ we also believe, and so we speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into his presence.
Yes, everything is for your sake, so that grace, as it extends to more and more people, may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God."

Have the Phoenicians reached the New World a thousand years before Columbus? Captain Beale: We need further scientific evidenceالفينيقيون اكتشفوا أميركا قبل كولومبس بزمن طويل/تقرير/
http://eliasbejjaninews.com/2017/01/14/have-the-phoenicians-reached-the-new-world-a-thousand-years-before-columbus-captain-beale-we-need-further-scientific-evidence/
Sat 14 Jan 2017/Report and translation by Lina Younis
NNA - Despite all what has been published and written in standard books and what we have learned in geography and history that the Italian Explorer Christopher Columbus has discovered America in 1492 AD, the British Retired Sailor and Scholar Captain Phillip Beale challenged such a longstanding historical fact by shedding light on the possibility that our ancestors the Phoenicians have crossed the Atlantic Ocean with their sailing boats and discovered a fourth continent - America.
Is this possible?!
The National News Agency (NNA) met the British Adventurer Captain Philip Beale at the sidelines of his presentation on Friday at "Adnan Kassar Business" Auditorium at the Lebanese American University (LAU) to dwell on his forthcoming expedition across the Atlantic, to further prove such a standpoint, attended by the representative of the Ministers of Information, Culture and Tourism, as well as the representative of the President of the Lebanese - American University George Jabra, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Design Elie Haddad, in addition to the President of the International Association to Save Tyre, UNESCO Ambassador of Goodwill Maha Khalil Shalabi.
In her delivered word, Head of the International Association Shalabi announced the launch of the special project entitled: "Expedition Crossing the Atlantic with Captain Philip Beale", out of the Association's objectives to encourage and endorse all archeological research focusing on the Phoenician culture and heritage. In reply to a question about the purpose of his visit to Lebanon, Captain Beale told NNA: " I'm currently visiting Lebanon to sign the partnership agreement with the 'International Association to Save Tyre' to work together to promote Phoenician culture and we're using the Project to raise awareness about the Phoenician heritage, culture and studies."
"The second purpose of my visit is to promote the expenditure and seek sponsorship for the Voyage and cover the expenses for more research on Phoenician culture," the former British navy adventurer added. Captain Beale highlighted during the presentation his upcoming Voyage across the Atlantic in September and spoke about the already available information on such a standpoint and the steps carried out until now. The retired captain explained in pictures and video his recent expedition circumnavigating across Africa in 2008, where he set sail in an ancient Phoenician sailing boat named "Phoenicia."
In 2005, Beary crafted a replica of the ancient Phoenician sailing boat "Phoenicia" with a length of 20 meters in the island of Arwad, using the same kinds of wood and design used by the ancient Phoenicians in the boats' craft industry. Beale also spoke about a similar expedition which he shall set off in September 2017, and will last from one month to three months, from Gibraltar towards the Atlantic Ocean, aboard the "Phoenicia" sailing boat, with 12 people from his professional team, in addition to researcher Remi Kahwaji from Lebanon,
In reply to a question about his forthcoming expedition, Beary elaborated to NNA that his Voyage aims to prove that the Phoenician sailing boats were capable of crossing the Atlantic ocean and thus reach the New World, and second to collect further scientific evidence and proof of the hypothesis he is currently working on. "I will write a book on what we have experienced in our Voyage," he told NNA.According to Beale, the success of the Voyage to cross the Atlantic Ocean could prove that the Phoenicians had the capability to reach America, but it doesn't prove that they did. "You need to collect more scientific evidence," he stressed. For her part, Shalabi touched on the advantages which will impact Lebanon if such an assumption has been proven, notably the significant moral benefit placing the Country's name on the global forefront and the focus of foreign and local media. "This achievement will open the way for archeologists and concerned researchers to conduct extensive and documented studies on the Phoenician civilization," Shalabi said. With such a hypothesis pending further verification, can we say another achievement could be added to the extensive list of our ancestors, the greatest sailors of ancient times, the Phoenicians, starting from the discovery of the alphabet, the purple dye and blown glass, down to the connection of the three continents of the Mediterranean Basin to the sheer-drop cliffs of southwest England?!.
Pending such verification and further scientific proof on such a hypothesis, can such a thing be indeed conceivable and probable?.>

Report: Birds Threatening Flights Safety, Hunted Down
Naharnet/January 14/17/Following the latest warnings that flights in and out of Lebanon's Beirut airport are at risk because of the large number of birds flying over a nearby garbage dump, reports said Saturday that hunters are shooting down the seagulls which angered environmentalist movements in Lebanon. A Lebanese environmental movement condemned in a statement on Saturday what it described as the “extermination of seagulls."It said hunters are shooting down the birds near the Costa Brava landill, adding that Lebanon is violating the Agreement on Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory waterbirds, LBCI reported Saturday. The statement said: “Under the eyes of the security forces, and at the beginning of the new term (of President Michel Aoun) and the new government (under PM Saad Hariri), who have vowed to preserve the environment, the seagulls in Costa Brava area are being exterminated at the hands of bird hunters which appeared in photos and videos circulated through social media outlets.”“The said birds are worldwide protected from hunting, in particular the international convention for the protection of aquatic birds which was signed by the Lebanese State. Lebanon would be violating the international conventions as well as violation of the Barcelona Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Sea,” added the statement. On Thursday, Lebanon has closed the Costa Brava landfill which lies at the foot of a runway at the Rafik Hariri International Airport in response to concerns that seagulls circling around the site pose a threat to aircraft safety. Public Works Minister Youssef Fenianos had said that workers were installing ultrasonic noise makers to keep the gulls out of the flight path, after local media reported multiple bird strikes, citing unnamed airport workers.Birds were seen around the landfill as planes touched down on the opposite end of the runway.Since authorities opened the landfill last year, environmentalists have warned it would attract large birds, leading to catastrophic strikes if they were sucked into engines.
Lebanon has been grappling with a garbage crisis since authorities were forced to close an overused landfill serving the capital in 2015.

Geagea Assures, Efforts Serious on New Law for Parliamentary Polls
Naharnet/January 14/17/Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea seemed pessimistic on the potentials that Lebanon's political parties reach common ground as for agreeing on a new electoral law that will govern the upcoming parliamentary elections, as he renewed rejection for the current 1960 law that governed the 2009 elections. “Behind the scenes, there are some serious efforts among political parties in all directions in order to reach a new law before the month's end,” An Nahar daily quoted Geagea as saying on Saturday. The LF chief seemed determined and rejected the 1960 law, he said: “We are very much determined to agree on a new law,” pointing out that President Michel Aoun would consider the start of his term as unsuccessful, shall that goal fail. Geagea stressed that the LF and the Free Patriotic Movement have the same goal in that regard, pointing out that efforts are pushing for the adoption of a hybrid law that brings between the laws proposed by the LF, al-Mustaqbal Movement, Progressive socialist party and Berri's proposal. Mustaqbal, the LF and the PSP parties have proposed a hybrid electoral law under which 68 MPs would be elected under the winner-takes-all system and 60 MPs under the proportional representation system. On the other hand, Berri proposed a law under which 64 MPs would be elected under a majoritarian law and 64 under the proportional representation system. Hizbullah on the other hand has repeatedly called for an electoral law based on proportional representation but other political parties, especially al-Mustaqbal, have rejected the proposal and argued that the party's controversial arsenal of arms would prevent serious competition in regions where the Iran-backed party is influential. The country has not voted for a parliament since 2009, with the legislature instead twice extending its own mandate. The 2009 polls were held under an amended version of the 1960 electoral law and the next elections are scheduled for May 2017.

Aoun to Visit Egypt Soon
Naharnet/January 14/17/President Michel Aoun is expected to visit Egypt before long for talks with President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, a trip that was purported to be part of his tour after Saudi Arabia and Qatar, but was postponed for pressing reasons, al-Joumhouria daily reported Saturday. Cairo was planned to be the third destination for the President during his first trip abroad to Saudi Arabia and Doha. But, it was postponed due to al-Sisi's engagement in pre-scehduled meetings, added the daily. The Egyptian side has stressed its commitment that Aoun visits Cairo as soon as possible, which will be determined in coordination between the Lebanese and Egyptian presidencies, added the daily. Aoun and an accompanying delegation of ministers concluded a Gulf trip on Thursday that included Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The outcome of the trip was assessed as positive mainly with regard to improving relations between Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. Ties were tense last year after SA halted a $3 billion military aid program for the Lebanese army over what it said was the dominance of Hizbullah movement.

Report: Aoun Determined, New Election Law Must be Agreed
Naharnet/January 14/17/As political parties bicker to find a new electoral law that meets the approval of all factions, President Michel Aoun made a firm stance and assured that the upcoming parliamentary elections will not be held based on the current 1960 law and that a new law must be stipulated, al-Joumhouria daily reported Saturday. The President's position is firm, and was reiterated in several occasions the most recent was during an interview with Al-Arabiya television that was recorded during his presence in Riyadh, where he said: “There is a Lebanese will to pass a new law and the debate is currently revolving around which law is the best for everyone,” added the daily. Aoun and an accompanying delegation of ministers concluded a visit to Saudi Arabia and Qatar on Thursday. The daily added, ministers in the delegation that accompanied Aoun to SA and Qatar, held sideline meetings there to deliberate the issue. It was another indication of the serious efforts to reach an agreement and the president's will to push political forces to agree on a new electoral law. Political parties are bickering over amending the current election law which divides seats among the different religious sects. Hizbullah has repeatedly called for an electoral law based on proportional representation but other political parties, especially al-Mustaqbal Movement, have rejected the proposal and argued that the party's controversial arsenal of arms would prevent serious competition in regions where the Iran-backed party is influential. Mustaqbal, the Lebanese Forces and the Progressive Socialist Party have meanwhile proposed a hybrid electoral law that mixes the proportional representation and the winner-takes-all systems. Speaker Nabih Berri has also proposed a hybrid law. The current parliament has failed to amend the law, and has extended its mandate twice amid criticism. New elections are scheduled for May 2017.

Tenenti: Al Akhbar article erroneous and misrepresents the way in which UNIFIL operates
Sat 14 Jan 2017/NNA - In response to a question by the National News Agency (NNA) with regard to media reports that accused UNIFIL of corruption and sectarianism, UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti told NNA that "UNIFIL is very dismayed by the erroneous and scurrilous article published by Al Akhbar today that misrepresents the way in which UNIFIL operates. "The allegations it makes about recruitment and employment in UNIFIL are inaccurate and baseless. UNIFIL has a transparent recruitment policy in line with UN Rules and Regulations. Currently, UNIFIL employs around 650 Lebanese staff coming from 157 different locations and they are recruited based on their qualifications. UNIFIL's recruitment policy and guidelines are publicly available.
"The suggestion that national staff are being reduced is baseless; in fact over the last few years there has been a progressive nationalization of positions that were occupied by international staff, in effect increasing the numbers of senior Lebanese staff.
There is no connection between the Strategic Review mission that the article mentions and the Fifth Committee's visit. "The upcoming strategic review is pursuant to a request made by the UN Security Council in its resolution 2305 of August 2016 in order to ensure that the Mission is configured most appropriately to fulfill its mandated tasks in line with peacekeeping good practice. The Fifth Committee delegation is undertaking a regular visit of a familiarization nature to a number of UN missions, not only UNIFIL. "The report in your newspaper misleads your readers and misrepresents what has been and continues to be an impartial effective UN Peacekeeping Mission enjoying excellent cooperation with our strategic partner, LAF and all other Lebanese partners including most importantly the communities in our Area of Operation. To avoid any such misunderstandings in the future, it would be useful for your newspaper to contact our Press Office for factual information before publishing such incorrect reports."

Aoun’s message to Arabs: Lebanon is a helpless country
Diana Moukalled/Arab News/Saturday 14 January 2017
http://eliasbejjaninews.com/2017/01/14/diana-moukalledarab-news-aouns-message-to-arabs-lebanon-is-a-helpless-country/
In a recent interview with Al Arabiya TV, Lebanese President Michel Aoun said: “The issue of (Hezbollah’s) weapons has now become part of the Middle East crisis, which involves the US, Russia, Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia. This issue is so formidable that it exceeds the Lebanese state’s ability to address it.” It seems Aoun will use what he said as a pretext to strike a balance between his inability to deter Hezbollah’s arsenal of weapons and its dangerous repercussions on the one hand, and his desire to ease tensions with Arab countries due to the party’s policies and roles on the other.
There is probably an undeclared desire among all parties to exceed the Lebanese state’s inability in this regard and maintain stability and close ties with Arab countries. Undoubtedly, Aoun’s visit to Saudi Arabia and Qatar managed to heal a rift that soured Lebanon’s relationship with both countries due to previous positions of Lebanese Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil, Aoun’s son-in-law, who opposed Arab official decisions taken at several meetings. In addition, the presidential vacuum at the time aggravated the situation, negatively impacting the whole of Lebanon.
It seems Aoun has decided to cautiously tread on a minefield, which Lebanon’s new government has to go through. He took the first step by seeking to restore relations with Arab states, especially Saudi Arabia.
President Aoun is trying to present himself as fundamentally different from Gen. Aoun. He always evades the press to avoid embarrassing questions that could make him lose his temper and talk nervously. His controversial statements have remarkably decreased, and a policy of containment has prevailed, even temporarily.
But Lebanese internal “harmony” will only postpone the problem, not solve it. Attempts to strike a balance in Lebanon’s regional relations, which Aoun is seemingly trying to achieve, will pose difficult questions. Continued silence, ignoring or even claiming inability regarding Hezbollah’s operations in Syria will only result in more crises, no matter how this issue is contained locally.
How can Lebanon accept the killing of hundreds of Lebanese youths in Syria in a regional project that does not recognize borders and violates state sovereignty? Since Hezbollah is the de facto power in Lebanon, the country will remain awaiting the end of the militia’s mission or role in Syria.
This means Lebanese silence, or rather official inability, regarding Hezbollah’s mission in Syria is the spark that threatens to ignite Lebanon at any moment. Given that, one can understand the clear message in Aoun’s statements, in which he attributed the issue of Hezbollah’s weapons to the regional situation. By doing so, he declares publicly that Lebanon is helpless and the countries of the region should understand this.

US Senate Intel Panel Plans Probe into Russia Spying
Agence France Presse/Naharnet/January 14/17/US senators have launched a probe into Russian spying, saying intelligence reports of Moscow's interference in the 2016 election and possible ties to American political parties "raise profound concerns."The investigation, backed by both Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Intelligence Committee, could trigger forced testimony by officials of both Barack Obama's outgoing administration and the incoming government of Donald Trump, who won the November 8 presidential vote. US intelligence agencies allege that Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a covert effort to interfere in the election to boost Trump and harm his opponent, Democrat Hillary Clinton. A report from the Director of National Intelligence released early this month says the Russians hacked Democratic Party computers and accounts to release files embarrassing to Clinton, and also conducted a campaign of media manipulation with the same aim. But the public version of the report was questioned for offering only weak evidence of its claims. An unproven dossier compiled by a former British MI6 intelligence agent also alleged close ties between the Trump campaign and Russian government, and said Moscow had lurid video of Trump with prostitutes while in Russia.
- British ex-spy's report -"It is critical to have a full understanding of the scope of Russian intelligence activities impacting the United States," the Senate panel said Friday. Trump, who will take office in one week, has repeatedly rejected suggestions that Moscow aided in his election victory. He has also compared US intelligence agencies to "Nazi Germany" for allegedly leaking to the media their analyses to undermine him. The probe will review the intelligence community's assessments and also other assessments, "including any intelligence regarding links between Russia and individuals associated with political campaigns," the committee said. That suggested the former British spy's explosive report could also be reviewed. Vowing to "get it right," the panel said most of the work will be done out of public scrutiny to protect classified information. In light of the hacking allegations, Trump's close ties with Russia, and especially President Vladimir Putin, have come under growing scrutiny.
Trump, who sees an opportunity to cooperate with Moscow in fighting jihadist groups like Islamic State, has expressed admiration for Putin, and only reluctantly accepted US intelligence's conclusion that Russian hackers acting on Putin's authority interfered in the US elections.
- Improper contact with Russian envoy? -The Washington Post reported that Trump's incoming national security advisor Michael Flynn telephoned Moscow's ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak, several times the day before Obama unveiled punitive measures over Russia's alleged cyberattacks to influence the US election. Flynn receives a speaking fee from Russian government-funded Russia Today. Trump's incoming press secretary, Sean Spicer, said Flynn in fact spoke with the envoy on Christmas Day, sending him a text to wish him a merry Christmas and happy New Year. "I look forward to touching base with you, and working with you, and I wish you all the best," Spicer quoted Flynn as telling the ambassador, adding that the envoy responded with holiday greetings. On December 28, the pair spoke by phone about "the logistics of setting up a call with the president of Russia and the president-elect after he was sworn in, and they exchanged logistical information on how to initiate and schedule that call," Spicer said. He added: "That was it. Plain and simple." In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Trump hinted he may scrap Obama's punitive measures altogether, and said he was prepared to meet with Putin after taking office January 20. Separately, he blasted the leak of the unsubstantiated report that Russia had gathered compromising personal and financial material on him as "totally made up facts by sleazebag political operatives." He promised a "full report" on the hacking claims within 90 days. In the first round of hearings for Trump nominees that wrapped up Friday, a week before Obama hands the Manhattan billionaire the keys to the White House, several of his cabinet picks publicly contradicted him.
But the president-elect dismissed talk of ideological splits. "All of my Cabinet nominee (sic) are looking good and doing a great job," he said in an early morning tweet. "I want them to be themselves and express their own thoughts, not mine!" The 70-year-old Republican later elaborated, telling reporters at Trump Tower: "I could have said, 'Do this, say that.' I don't want that. I want them all to be themselves.""And I'm going to do the right thing, whatever it is. I may be right. And they may be right."Over three days of feisty hearings this week, Trump's nominees warned of the threat posed by Russia, hailed NATO, repudiated torture, defended the US intelligence community and cautioned against withdrawing from the Iran nuclear treaty and the Paris climate accord. On virtually every controversial foreign policy stance that Trump took during the campaign, they hedged and backtracked and sought to assure senators that they shared the consensus that has shaped Western strategic thinking and institutions since World War II.

AFP, Washington Saturday, 14 January 2017/Russia has invited Donald Trump's incoming administration to attend upcoming Syrian peace talks in Kazakhstan, The Washington Post reported Friday, bypassing the Obama administration which has been notably absent from the process. Turkey, which is co-hosting the talks with Russia, has said Washington would be asked to join the talks being held in the Kazakh capital Astana, likely on January 23. But there has been no confirmation from Moscow, and the current US administration said Friday it had not been asked to take part. "We have not received any kind of formal invitation to the meeting," said State Department spokesman Mark Toner. "But if we do receive an invitation, we will certainly make a recommendation" to Trump's incoming administration to honor it, he said. The timetable would put the meeting just three days after the Republican president-elect takes office on January 20, succeeding the Democrat Barack Obama. Invitations to the talks have yet to be sent out, and the format of the discussions remains unclear. But according to The Washington Post, the Russian ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak, extended an invitation to attend the upcoming talks in a December 28 telephone conversation with Trump's incoming national security advisor Michael Flynn. The Post quoted an unidentified official with Trump's transition team as saying that "no decision was made" during the call, adding: "I don't have anything additional on US attendance at this time."The talks on the future of Syria were announced in late December after a nationwide ceasefire was secured. They are being organized for the first time without the involvement of Washington, which had led all the international discussions to resolve the Syrian crisis in recent years. Though the United States has not been a direct party to this specific initiative, Toner said, "we have been in close contact with both the Russians and the Turks as this has gone forward." "And, we would encourage the incoming administration to continue to pursue those efforts." Iran, an ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, is also involved in setting up talks aimed at paving the way to an end of the nearly six-year conflict. Russia, which is counting on improved relations with the United States under the Trump presidency after strains with Obama, refused Friday to say whether Washington should be invited to Astana. Russia, a key Assad ally, is "interested in the broadest possible representation of the parties who have a bearing on the prospects of a political settlement in Syria," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. The Astana meeting should serve as a preamble to the next round of peace negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva on February 8 under the auspices of the United Nations. "Our recommendation would be -- and we've said this before -- that we support any effort aimed at getting political negotiations back up and running in Geneva and aimed at solidifying the cease-fire in Syria," the US State Department spokesman said.

Anti-ISIS fight going ‘as fast as possible’
AFP, Washington Saturday, 14 January 2017/The US-led coalition attacking the ISIS group in Iraq and Syria would struggle to dramatically quicken the campaign, a top Pentagon official said Friday, amid mounting pressure to accelerate the fight. President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly said he wants to “bomb the shit” out of ISIS, and on Thursday his pick for defense secretary, James Mattis, said operations could be intensified -- especially in the push toward the militants’ stronghold of Raqa in Syria. But Elissa Slotkin, the acting assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, said the pace of the Raqa campaign can only go as fast as the coalition-backed local forces on the ground. Commanders “have a plan that I believe is pushing to the limit what we can do on intensifying that campaign,” said Slotkin, a political appointee who will not be working under Trump. In Syria, the coalition is providing weapons, training and air support to Kurdish and Arab forces as they work to push ISIS from Syria. A similar tactic is underway in Iraq, with the coalition backing Kurdish Peshmerga and Iraqi security forces as they fight for Mosul. Slotkin said anti-ISIS operations in Syria were creating a “snowball effect,” with each new victory generating more recruits willing to fight ISIS. She estimated the coalition-backed forces, known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, now numbered about 50,000. Speaking more broadly of the anti-ISIS effort, Slotkin said she had a “hard time” seeing how the campaign could proceed much faster, and did not see what additional targets could be attacked that weren’t already on the military’s radar. “I would have some questions about what exactly are you striking if you just launched a big campaign,” she said. The coalition has been making steady gains against ISIS, with the militants having lost control of many of the main cities they had held in Iraq in Syria. Outgoing Pentagon chief Ashton Carter said in an interview Thursday that ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s “days are numbered.”

Eight Dead in Raids on Rebel-Held Syrian Town
Agence France Presse/Naharnet/January 14/17/Air strikes on a rebel-held town in northwestern Syria killed eight people on Saturday, a monitor said, the latest to hit the area where Al-Qaeda's former affiliate has a strong presence. Most of those killed in the Idlib province town of Maarat Masrin were civilians, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Their deaths came after those of three civilians, one of them a child, in strikes on the nearby town of Orum al-Joz late on Friday, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said. He said the strikes were carried out by Russian or Syrian government aircraft. The US-led coalition too has carried out air strikes on targets in Idlib province in recent weeks. The Observatory says it determines whose planes carry out raids according to their type, location, flight patterns and the munitions involved. A ceasefire brokered by regime ally Russia and rebel ally Turkey that went into effect on December 30 has brought relative calm to most of the country. But it excludes former Al-Qaeda affiliate Fateh al-Sham and its jihadist rival the Islamic State group. Idlib province is largely controlled by a rebel alliance known as the Army of Conquest, which is dominated by Fateh al-Sham. The ceasefire had been overshadowed by deadly fighting in the rebel-held Wadi Barada district, northwest of Damascus, which is the source of the capital's mains water supply. But a local truce was agreed on Friday under which rebels pulled back to allow repair teams to enter to restore the supply, which had been cut since December 22. The area was calm on Saturday for the first day since the nationwide ceasefire took effect late last year, the Observatory said. "Maintenance workers began their work as soon as they entered (Wadi Barada) on Friday," a source in the provincial governor's office told AFP. He said they were still assessing the damage and would then have to prepare the necessary equipment before being able to restore the supply. The United Nations says that 5.5 million people in Damascus and its suburbs have been without mains water because of the cut.

Chemical agents found in battle for Mosul university
Reuters Saturday, 14 January 2017/Iraqi special forces battled ISIS militants inside the Mosul University campus on Saturday in a second day of fierce clashes in the complex and also discovered chemicals used to try to make weapons, officers said. “There are still clashes. We entered the university and cleared the technical institute, dentistry and antiquities departments,” Lieutenant General Abdelwahab al-Saadi of the Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) told a Reuters reporter in the complex. “In the coming hours it will be liberated completely,” he said. CTS troops had gathered in the university canteen. As they unfurled a map of the area, a suspected Islamic State drone flew overhead and they shot at it. The Iraqi forces also found chemical substances ISIS had used to try to make weapons, CTS commander Sami al-Aridhi said. The United Nations says the militants seized nuclear materials used for scientific research from the university when they overran Mosul and vast areas of northern Iraq and eastern Syria in 2014. ISIS have used chemical agents including mustard gas in a number of attacks in Iraq and Syria, US officials, rights groups and residents have said. Recapturing the university would be a crucial strategic gain and allow Iraqi forces to advance quicker towards the Tigris river, from where they will be able to launch attacks on the city’s west, still all under IS control, military officers say.

Iraqi Forces Push onto Mosul University Grounds
Associated Press/Naharnet/January 14/17/Iraqi commanders say that their forces have secured less than a quarter of Mosul University Saturday as they face stiff resistance from Islamic State fighters in the battle for control of the city. Brig. Gen. Haider Fadhil and Lt. Gen. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi said that Iraqi forces continued to push into the university compound from the southeast a day after they first breached the grounds Friday morning. Thick clouds of black smoke rose over the sprawling complex Saturday morning. Mortar fire and gunshots could be heard from ongoing clashes. The massive operation to retake Mosul, Iraq's second largest city, from IS was launched in October. Since then Iraqi forces have slowly clawed back about a third of the city.

US Air Strike Kills Qaida 'Senior Leader' in Yemen
Agence France Presse/Naharnet/January 14/17/A US air strike in Yemen has killed a regional al-Qaida senior operative, the Pentagon said Friday. The January 8 strike in the central province of Baida killed Abd al-Ghani al-Rasas of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said. "This strike removes an AQAP senior leader and facilitator in the area and will disrupt AQAP's terrorism operations in Yemen and the region," he said in a statement. AQAP and the Islamic State group have exploited a power vacuum created by a conflict between the government and Shiite Huthi rebels, in order to expand their presence in Yemen, especially in the south and southeast. US operations against AQAP in Yemen are separate from a Saudi-led coalition campaign against the Huthis.

Istanbul club attacker ‘fled with son, left wife and daughter’
Staff writer, Al Arabiya English Saturday, 14 January 2017/Turkey arrested two Chinese nationals of Uighur origins on Friday, for suspected links to the mass shooting in the Reina night club on New Year's Eve in Istanbul which resulted in the death 39 people. Turkish newspaper Hurriyet quoted the police as saying that, after staging the attack, the Reina attacker went to the house he had rented in Istanbul towards the end of December 2016 and took his son, but left his wife and 18-month-old daughter. The newspaper added that the wife of the attacker, known as Abu Muhammed Horasani, was arrested for interrogation on January 11. She said that she did not know about her husband’s connection with ISIS or his plot. She added that he came home that night, said goodbye to her and took their 4-year-old son.

Turkish court arrests 2 Uighurs in relation to Istanbul attack
Reuters, Ankara Saturday, 14 January 2017/Two Chinese nationals of Uighur origin were arrested on Friday for suspected links to the mass shooting in an Istanbul lounge on New Year's Eve, state-run Anadolu agency said. Two suspects, Omar Asim and Abuliezi Abuduhamiti, who are Chinese citizens, were remanded in custody on charges of being members of an armed terrorist organization, and aiding in 39 counts of murder. Turkish authorities last week said the man who killed 39 people in an attack on an Istanbul lounge was probably an ethnic Uighur. ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was revenge for Turkish military involvement in Syria. Anadolu news agency also said 35 people had been detained so far in relation to the attack. Uighurs were among those detained, local media reports said. The Uighurs are a largely Muslim, Turkic-speaking minority in far western China with significant diaspora communities across Central Asia and Turkey. The suspect, who authorities have not named, shot his way into exclusive Istanbul lounge Reina and opened fire with an automatic rifle, throwing stun grenades to allow himself to reload and shooting the wounded on the ground. Among those killed in the attack were Turks and visitors from several Arab nations, India and Canada.

Abbas ‘may reverse’ Israel recognition
AFP, Paris Saturday, 14 January 2017/The Palestinians may consider "reversing recognition" of Israel if Donald Trump moves the US embassy to Jerusalem, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas said in an interview released by the French daily Le Figaro on Friday.
"I wrote to president(-elect) Trump to ask him not to do it. Not only would this move deprive the United States of all legitimacy in playing a role in conflict resolution, it would also destroy the two-state solution," Abbas was quoted as saying. Trump -- who takes office next Friday -- has said he plans to acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and relocate the US embassy there from Tel Aviv. The move is bitterly opposed by Palestinians, who see it as a destructive and unilateral action as the status of the city is still contested.
The United States and most UN member states do not recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital, and the city's status is one of the thorniest issues of the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel supports Trump's plan and has encouraged previous US presidents to take similar steps but to no avail. If the embassy transfer takes place, "there would be several options for us, and we would discuss them with Arab countries," Abbas said. "Reversing our recognition of the State of Israel is one of them. But we hope that it doesn't reach that point, and that, on the contrary, we will be able to work with the next American administration," he added. Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) recognized each other under the 1993 Oslo agreements. But the process which was supposed to deliver a lasting peace is moribund. More than 70 countries meet in Paris on Sunday at a conference expected to reaffirm support for the "two-state solution" in which Palestinian and Israeli states would live side-by-side in peace and security. The Paris meeting "may be the last chance for implementing" the two-state solution, Abbas warned. On Monday, the Palestinian news agency Wafa said Abbas had written to Trump, warning an embassy move would have a "disastrous impact on the peace process, on the two-state solution and on the stability and security of the entire region."

A Member of Parliament of Afghanistan: Iran Interferes in Afghanistan in All Means
NCRI/January 14/17/The Member of Parliament of Afghanistan, Haji Maulavi Tarakhil Mohammadi stated that the Iranian regime interferes in Afghanistan affairs in order to destroy the country, deteriorate the situation and to spread chaos. In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat News, Maulavi stated:"we have a big university for teaching Quran and theology where 4500 students are studying in. This university was targeted with explosive packs; the students were caked in blood and the Quran books got torn. Why are they acting like that? Do the Muslims perpetrate such brutal acts? All their efforts are to destabilize Afghanistan so that people do not live in peace and brotherhood. None of the parties supporting the Iranian regime will take the responsibility for the attacks but the Iranian regime is definitely responsible for the blasts."

Iran: The Plunders of the Intelligence Corps' Officials of the Revolutionary Guards

NCRI/January 14/17/In a conflict over plunders, three deputies of the Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards have been detained. On Friday 13th of January 2017, state run Amadnews reported that the deputies of the Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards were detained due to economic corruption. According to this source, a security official has told to Amadnews that these deputies were detained due to huge economic corruption, broking and extorting money from the rich and capitalists as well as money laundering. Mehrab, Azim, and Afshari are the three senior deputies that work for the Head of the Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards, Hossein Taeb. Having smuggled major raw material for the production of vegetable oil, the deputies got arrested. Among them, Mehrab got released on bail but Azim and Afshari are still in prison. These deputies were detained by the Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards headed by Mohammad Hossein Zibaee Nejad known as the Commander Nejat.in order to carry out one of the main missions of the Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards, He was tasked with stopping the economic activities of this organization. He was also the former commander of Vali-e Amr Corps which is originally founded to protect Khamenei and other regime officials. As Amadnews reported, the Commander Nejat confessed that the growing economic activities of the Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards have led to the increase of anarchy, extortion, economic insecurity and the corruption of managers. He pointed out that these activities shall be stopped as soon as possible. The Intelligence Corps of the Revolutionary Guards is one of the parallel agencies that were established by Ali Khamenei in order to proceed some specific missions. This organization is carrying out activities after a period of time in the form of a security ministry and since there is no other responsible body for that except the House of Leadership, it can be called the SAVAK of the Iranian regime.

The Iran Regime Fears Telegram

NCRI/January 14/17/Having been scared of the social network channels, the Iranian regime requested the channels to cooperate and work as a spy for the government. One of the Telegram channels has been very well welcomed in Iran and according to the figures; there are currently 40 million smartphones used to access Telegram. According to the figures presented by the Iranian regime, the total amount of assigned lines (mobile phones) reached to 150 million and 230 thousand users by the end of September 2016; i.e. nearly twice the entire population of the country. This figure is among the highest in the world because the society has the quench to obtain up to date and reliable information. The Minister of Interior, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli admitted that IRIB has also lost its influence in the society. ISNA news agency reported that there are nearly 170 thousand active Persian channels in Telegram and about 11 thousand channels have more than 5000 members. According to the figures, 20 million out of 100 million users of Telegram Messenger are Iranians. As the Telegram Messenger has been greatly welcomed by the Iranians and youngsters, the Iranian regime is gripped by fear to filter the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and the Iranian Resistance websites. Regarding this matter, one of the authorities of the regime confessed that:"Telegram does not cooperate with the Iranian regime. The filtering policy has also become a joke and in the upcoming presidential election we might encounter the highest electoral frauds."
The Secretary of the committee that determines the extensive criminal content tabs, Abdolsamad Khoram Abadi said:" Among the elections held last year in Iran, we had the most electoral fraud in elections of the Parliament and the Assembly of Experts. The foreign social media managers refused to tell us about the contents that had been released on the Internet against the candidates or their IP-Addresses. Consequently, we could not deal with them."(IRIB 2, January 1st 2017). The CEO of Telegram Messenger, Paul Dorf stated that he has declined the request of cooperation with the Iranian regime to spy on the Iranian citizens.
Nevertheless, why does the regime make this much effort to filter Telegram and what is the main problem? As a matter of fact, the Iranian regime has tactfully demanded Telegram Company to filter PMOI (MEK) and the Iranian Resistance websites. The Iranian regime is actually scared of the Mujahedeen since it perpetrated the massacre of 30 thousand of those so that they would not have any connection with people but the current cyberspace has destroyed the plans of the regime. Shohadaye Iran, a state-run website, reported that recently an outfit of the Iranian regime vigorously urged Telegram to filter the channels that are sympathetic to the Iranian Resistance. But it was rebuffed by the cloud-based instant messaging service.
Telegram has responded that based on the principle of freedom of speech it would not pay heed to this request and would not shut down or filter these channels, the state-run website reported on December 31.
Telegram is very popular in Iran and is widely used by the Iranian youths who try to evade the clerical regime’s censorship on the internet. According to some news reports, currently Telegram is the main messaging app and most popular social media platform for Iranians.
Shahin Gobadi, a PMOI spokesman, said: “The clerical regime’s attempt to urge even foreign companies to filter the channels sympathetic to the Iranian Resistance clearly manifests the regime’s fear and anxiety regarding the growing popularity of the Iranian Resistance at home, in particular among the young Iranians. It is also an acknowledgement by the regime that despite all the suppression and censorship, Iranians are eager to connect to the MEK and obtain the Resistance’s news and information.”
“This is in line with repeated warnings in recent months by the regime’s senior officials about the growing popularity and activities of the MEK among the Iranian youths, particularly in universities,” Gobadi added.
The Iranian regime is also fearful of social protests, strikes, and rallies. The people can actually be connected to each other through these instant messaging networks such as Telegram and they can stage rally and protest in front of the Parliament of Iran and Evin Prison.
Following the uprising of 2009, the Iranian regime immediately established a committee to determine the extensive criminal content tabs. However, the government officials, including the Secretary of the committee, Abdolsamad Khoram Abadi in an interview on January 2nd 2017 had to admit the defeat.

Astana talks — Turning point or just another truce?
Dr. Hamdan Al-Shehri/Arab News/Saturday 14 January 2017
For six years, Syria has been experiencing a popular revolution which has faced both regional and international repression from Iran and its terrorist militias on the one hand, and Russia on the other. This has led Syrian opposition groups to use any means of defending themselves against the tyrant regime of Bashar Assad and its backers in order to liberate Syria. Many Syrian factions in addition to the Free Syrian Army (FSA) have engaged in armed conflict and asymmetric warfare but, about a month ago, we saw a huge withdrawal of the Syrian factions from the battleground of Aleppo.
At the beginning most of us thought it was a dangerous moment, certainly for the Syrian opposition. Losing Aleppo meant losing an important stronghold for the Syrian factions; later, however, we learned of a cease-fire agreement including Russia,Turkey and Iran. This was designed to lead to talks in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The talks are being shepherded and guided by Russia, which stood with the Assad regime, and Iran which backed the Shiite militias. Turkey promised to put pressure on Russia and Iran with a view to assuring the Syrian factions to get them to implement the cease-fire. Here is the question: Will this cease-fire last? Is Russia serious this time? What is the plan? We are familiar with the Geneva Agreement and UN Resolution 2254 which provided for a political process with a transitional government that excluded Assad. Will the talks in Astana depend on this resolution? And, will the Iranians and Assad accept it?
What about the Syrian opposition? Are they going to accept anything less after their huge sacrifices? Many questions will be asked. Observing the Syrian scene suggests that the agreement will be in vain, especially when we remember the daily cease-fire violations by the regime and the Iranian militias. On top of that, Hezbollah prevented Russian officers from entering Wadi Barada to assess the work needed and to continue negotiations. Is this militia and Iran stronger than the Russians? What we know is that the Russians can put more pressure on their opponents. Russia’s intervention has changed the situation and with their base in Hemeimeem they can protect and promote their interests in Syria. But what about their interests in the region with Turkey and with the Arabs?
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states will not accept an Iranian presence in Syria or in any Arab countries. If the Russians want more influence and stability in the region, they should put an end to the Iranian invasion, ask Assad to step down and let the Syrians choose their president. In the last few years, all the concessions made by the Syrian people have resulted in thousands of deaths and many being forced to leave the country in scenes of the most tragic suffering. It is time for the regime and its allies to make concessions provided Russia wants to stop the bloodshed in Syria, normalize its relations with the Syrian people and also with the other countries in the region.

Palestinian leader: Peace could suffer if US embassy moves

NICOLE WINFIELD | AP | Published — Saturday 14 January 2017/VATICAN CITY: Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned Saturday that peace could suffer if the incoming Trump administration goes ahead with plans to move the US embassy to Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Abbas made the comments as he inaugurated the Palestinian embassy to the Holy See following an audience with Pope Francis. Speaking through an Italian translator, Abbas said he had only heard of the proposal by US President-elect Donald Trump to move the embassy to Jerusalem, and couldn’t comment officially unless and until it happens. But he added: “If this is the decision, to transfer the embassy to Jerusalem, it will not help peace and we hope it doesn’t happen.” The Palestinians strongly oppose the move, saying it would kill any hopes for negotiating an Israeli-Palestinian peace agreement and rile the region by undercutting Muslim and Christian claims to the holy city. Trump hasn’t yet laid out a clear Mideast policy, but has signaled he will be more sympathetic to Israel’s hard-line right than previous administrations. He has also vowed to move the US embassy. Abbas has written to Trump warning of the risks of such a move and asked him to reconsider, while also flagging the concern to Arab and other world leaders, said the Palestinian foreign minister, Riyad Malki. The Vatican has long sought an internationally guaranteed status for Jerusalem that safeguards its sacred character. It was unclear if the Vatican would want to wade into the issue by mentioning Jerusalem in its post-audience communique.
During the meeting, Abbas presented Francis with gifts recalling Christianity’s birthplace in the Holy Land, including a stone from the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and documentation about the ongoing restoration of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem.
After the papal meeting, Abbas formally inaugurated the new Palestinian embassy across the street from one of the main gates of Vatican City: He pulled back a curtain revealing a plaque and extended the Palestinian flag from a flagpole outside a window.
The embassy, located in the same building as the embassies of Peru, Ecuador and Burkina Faso, is a fruit of recent accords in which the Vatican formally recognized the “State of Palestine.”In his comments to reporters, Abbas said he hoped other countries would follow the Vatican’s example and recognize the Palestinian state.

Obama’s perfidious parting gift to Iran
Khalaf Ahmad Al-Habtoor/Arab News/Saturday 14 January 2017
http://www.arabnews.com/node/1038631/columnsBarack Obama’s emotional farewell speech before a crowd of thousands was another fine example of the type of inspirational oratory that saw him elected eight years ago as US president. Punctuated by standing ovations and deafening applause, there was hardly a dry eye in the house, including his own.
However, unlike my appreciative response to his masterful 2009 speech in Cairo University, promising improved relations between the US and the Arab world, on this occasion I was unmoved. It has been proven over and over again that he is not a man of his word. At least with President-elect Donald Trump, we know what we are getting. We may be in for a rough ride, but we will not be fooled.
Obama’s congenial façade hid a dagger. He was instrumental in damaging my world, our Arab world, perhaps beyond repair for generations to come. For that I will never forgive him. He has left the Palestinians in dire straits, without a shred of hope. Homes in East Jerusalem are being demolished as I write, while his successor plans to move the US Embassy to Jerusalem, signifying the death of any two-state solution.
He contributed to the ruination of Libya, and permitted the proliferation of Daesh and other extremist groups on his watch. Even more shameful was his abandonment of the Syrian opposition just when they were gaining ground, opening the door to Russia’s military intervention.
Worst of all was his invitation to an undeserving rogue state, one that constitutes the region’s greatest threat, to rejoin the community of nations. For all their hate speech against the ‘Great Satan’ the ayatollahs, enriched by hundreds of billions, must be mourning the loss of their greatest benefactor and his wingman Secretary of State John Kerry.
According to Jennifer Ruben writing in The Washington Post, Kerry’s efforts opened up “the US banking system so that Iran could get the ‘benefit’ of the deal,” and “followed up by acting as Tehran’s chamber of commerce, trying to cajole businesses to set up in Iran.”
Iran’s European spending spree is bearing fruit. Days ago Iran Air took delivery of the first of 100 Airbus passenger jets on order, and has signed a $16.6 billion deal with Boeing for 80 more. The carrier’s chairman described the delivery as “a great day.”
That was not the only great day for Tehran in recent times. Arguably, Iran’s greatest day was one that has been given little prominence by the mainstream media, perhaps deliberately so. Obama secretly cut a deal to supply Tehran with 116 metric tons of uranium, enough to fuel 10 nuclear bombs, notwithstanding Iran’s violation of the nuclear deal’s terms by exceeding its production of heavy water last year, overlooked by the Obama administration.
Speaking to The Washington Post, political blogger and Iran expert Omri Ceren perfectly summed up this disastrous state of affairs. “We both allow the Iranians to exceed the heavy water limits in the deal — and then richly compensate them with uranium that can be used for bombs. Our allies would be excused for thinking we are now promoting Iran’s interests, not the West’s.”
Providing an unstable state entity openly hostile to its neighbors and engaged in furthering its dominance over Arab countries certainly is not in the interest of Gulf states either. Trump has called the Iran deal “a disaster” and “the worst deal ever negotiated.” He has agreed to discuss it with its most vociferous opponent, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, once he moves into the White House.
That said, Trump has admitted unraveling the deal is no simple task because the other state signatories involved — China, Russia, the UK, France and Germany — have no appetite to follow suit. They have their eyes on lucrative trade deals. Dollar signs have obliterated their so-called cherished values when it comes to Tehran. They are not fazed by Iran’s domination of Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, its weapons supply to Hezbollah, its long-range ballistic missile program or its military expansion.
We definitely are. Those of us who live on Iran’s doorstep are right to be concerned, especially now that sales of oil will vastly fatten the Iranian treasury, which will undoubtedly play a role in strengthening Shiite militias in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon and elsewhere.
Obama’s provision of 116 metric tons of uranium makes the situation even more worrying, particularly at a time when Congress is gearing up to slap Iran with yet more sanctions, a move viewed by President Hassan Rouhani as a violation of the deal incurring “a harsh reaction.” He warned: “America cannot influence our path of strength and endurance.”
In that case, Iran could tear up the deal unilaterally, throw the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors out, remove monitoring systems, break seals on centrifuges and clandestinely take the nuclear weapons path with a vengeance. As unlikely a scenario as that may be when Iran celebrates its coming out of the cold, it is not beyond the realms of possibility. During his last days in office, Obama has stabbed America’s Middle East allies in the back. It is clear that the nuclear deal was heavily weighted to benefit Iran on many levels, but what we were not told was its legitimization of Iran’s acquisition of uranium. The media is hot with discussions on Obama’s legacy. I can only wonder how many more nasty surprises are in store.
How many times do we have to be burned before we get the message that America cannot be trusted? Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) must shore up their defenses in any way open to them. Forget diplomatic speak. We know who our enemies are and we know what they want. Ultimately, we can only rely on each other. That is the bottom line. If we believe that any major power will protect us if our backs are ever against the wall facing a nuclear Iran — treaty or no treaty — like Ukraine, we will be thrown to the wolves.

The UN and Obama's Act of Aggression
Maria Polizoidou/Gatestone Institute/January 14/17
https://www.gatestoneinstitute.org/9759/un-obama-aggression
UNSC Res. 2334 is an act of political aggression against foundation of the Judeo-Christian civilization and should be treated as such. The Jewish nation has every right to consider this attack as an act of war against it.
President Obama sometimes seems to have an indifference to historical truth that often borders on antagonism. Obama has again tried to re-write history by claiming that Greece, with the help of the winners of World War I, was an aggressive and imperialistic state that cared only to re-build its Empire against the Turks.
The notion that ancient non-Muslim nations are occupiers in their own lands, is repeated in the UN Resolution 2334.
Historically, Muslim forces began invading Syria in 634, and ended by conquering Constantinople in 1453. They invaded not only all of Turkey -- obliterating the great Christian empire of Byzantium -- but then went on to conquer all of North Africa, Greece, southern Spain, parts of Portugal and eastern Europe.
President Obama apparently did not learn about the Trojan War in school; he apparently never read Homer to know that the inhabitants of the Bosporus and much of Asia Minor were Greeks -- just as he apparently never read the Bible, or the Greek and Roman historic records of the Jewish people and their capital, Jerusalem.
The US and the UN are not who determine what is historically true and what is not. These shameful votes should be reversed immediately; if not, all funding should be withdrawn from the United Nations. They are now, to paraphrase the words Vladimir Lenin, "paying for the rope with which members of the UN will hang them."
If US President Barack Obama were uneducated, if his staff consisted of people who had never been taught history at school, if the government consisted of savages who have just emerged from the Amazon jungle, we could somehow "justify" their ignorance about the history of the Mediterranean and the Middle Eastern people.
But that is not what is going on. This ambush against Israel in UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which considers the Jewish people "occupiers" in their own ancient capital and the holiest part of it, is an act of jihad and an act of political violence – perpetrated by governments to achieve political goals.
This resolution did not randomly emerge from a historical moment, or as the result of political choices based on reasonable criteria to provide peace and stability in the region. It does not help either the Arabs living in the disputed territories -- Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip - or the Israelis in any peace process. It is an act of vengeance against the foundations of Judeo-Christian civilization and should be treated as such. The Jewish nation has every right to consider this attack an act of war against it. It certainly is an act of war against the history of the Jews and the freedom, democracy, human rights, pluralism and rule of law that Israel represents in the Middle East.
President Obama and his government at the beginning of their service eight years ago turned against the history of the Greek nation with the same political aggression. Obama had a chance to do that when he went to the Turkish Parliament, on April 6, 2009.
Sadly, he did not acknowledge the genocide of the Greeks by the Turkish army under Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Between 1913 and 1923, millions of Greeks who had lived in Turkey since before the great Christian Byzantine empire, were either slaughtered or driven out. According to some Greek historians, between 800,000 and 1,200,000 Greeks were slaughtered during this period; every year on September14, the State of Greece officially honors the memory of those who died in Asia Minor.
Instead, Obama gave political cover to what the Turks did by saying at the Turkish Parliament on April 6, 2009: "You freed yourself from foreign control, and you founded a republic that commands the respect of the United States and the wider world".
The "foreign control" to which President Obama refers is the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, where the League of Nations was established. [1]
President Obama, in evident his enthusiasm to flatter the ego of Turkey's current president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, "forgot" to mention some important events of that era. President Obama "forgot" all about the genocide of Greeks and Christians in Asia Minor by Mustafa Kemal's Ataturk Turkish. Barack Obama methodically "murdered" historical truth, by ignoring the fact that the Greek army, after the end of World War I in 1918, was sent to Asia Minor under the instructions of the great powers and the winners of the war, to protect Christian populations from persecution, murders and rapes of Muslim Turkish. The Greek army did not go as an occupier but as a protector of human life and human rights.
President Obama sometimes seems to have an indifference to historical truth that often borders on antagonism.[2]
The Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs immediately responded by saying that "history cannot be rewritten".
Now, this is what President Obama has tried to do again: to re-write history by claiming that Greece, with the winners' help of World War I, was an aggressive and imperialistic State that cared only to re-build its Empire against the Turks. In other words, President Obama seemed to mean that the winners of WW I were some Christian Countries who wanted through Greece to establish a Christian Empire, such as the Byzantine Empire, and that Muslim territories and the International Community should, as he was the leader of such a powerful nation, "adopt" his view of history.
The notion that ancient nations which are not Muslim are occupiers in their own lands, is repeated in the UN Resolution 2334.
Obama was complimenting Turkey on not returning to the Ottoman Empire, which officially ended in 1922.
Democracy in Turkey now -what is left of it, that is - consists of all the military and the judiciary purged of anyone who believed in government by the people. Just since August, Turkey has arrested more than 26,000 people, including 120 journalists and has closed 150 news outlets.
"There is no more critical journalism, 90 percent of the free press is destroyed directly or indirectly," according to Erol Onderoglu, the Turkish representative for Reporters Without Borders. "Investigative journalism is considered treason. Journalism has been stolen by the government."
Is that kind of clampdown what Europeans would eventually like to see happen here, too?
Historically, Muslim forces began invading Syria in 634, and ended by conquering Constantinople in 1453.
They invaded not only all of Turkey - obliterating the great Christian empire of Byzantium - but then went on to conquer all of North Africa, Greece, Southern Spain, parts of Portugal, and eastern Europe, including Hungary, Serbia and the Balkans.
Emperor Constantine the First had moved the capital of the Roman Empire from Rome to Constantinople and laid the foundation for Christianity to become the official religion of the Roman-Byzantine State and the Western world in general. Emperor Constantine had given the citizens of the Roman Empire the right of the religious tolerance, a liberal action 1700 years ago; today, many leaders in the Arab world say they cannot tolerate Christian Churches in their territories.
The Greeks wanted during the World War I to re-establish the Byzantine Empire, but the Turkish-Muslim world prevented it from happening. Instead, commencing in 1914-15, they conducted a genocide against both the Armenians, and the Greeks until 1923.
At present the Greek community in Turkey numbers around 3000 and are not allowed to attend Greek schools.
For President Obama, the Turkish "victory" seems to have been a sensational win against the Western-Christian world, even though it was this world that had made him President of the United States.
President Obama apparently "forgot" the American's testimonies who helped the Greeks to escape from Kemal's Turkish massacres. He "forgot" the 1.5 million Greek refugees who were expelled from their homes in Asia Minor by the Turkish army. The Turkish "democracy" which Mr. Obama so admires, built on seas of blood of other people who were living in those areas. Perhaps, refugees for President Obama and his government, are only those who are Muslims. All the others are "occupiers"...
But even if the Greek army went to Asia Minor as an occupier -- if we adopt the most distorted view of history, where exactly it would be an occupier? In the cities that were inhabited by Greeks from the beginning of recorded history?
President Obama apparently did not learn about the Trojan War in school; he apparently never read Homer to know that the inhabitants of the Bosporus and much of Asia Minor were Greeks - just as he apparently never read the Bible, or the Greek and Roman historic records of the Jewish people and their capital, Jerusalem.
The Obama administration, to cover the president's shameful ambush against the Jewish state, sought through Obama's Deputy National Security Advisor, Ben Rhodes, to shift the responsibility for the UN resolution onto the Israeli government of Benjamin Netanyahu. Where does the US Democratic party's downhill plummet end?

The US and the UN – both the Security Council and UNESCO - are not who determine what is historically true and what is not. These shameful votes should be reversed immediately; if not, all funding should be withdrawn from the United Nations, by United States and all freedom-loving democracies. They are now, to paraphrase the words of the Soviet Union's Vladimir Lenin, "paying for the rope with which members of the UN will hang them."

[1] President Obama also said in the same speech: "At the end of World War I, Turkey could have succumbed to the foreign powers that were trying to claim its territory, or sought to restore an ancient empire". The "ancient empire" that Obama refers to, is unclear – Ottoman or Byzantine - and the "foreign powers that were trying to claim its territory" were the winners of World War I, including the USA.

Dubious leaks, true problems
Maria Dubovikova/Al Arabiya/January 14/17
How to prevent any possibility of warming ties between Washington and Moscow? The intelligence services of the United States could give you the perfect answer. Make “Russia hacked America” go viral, make US citizens be sure that Trump is Kremlin’s project or at least cast doubt about his real ties with Moscow. The outcome of such a campaign is to imply the whole administration is somehow paralyzed by Russia. As long as any positive move or gesture can be easily interpreted with the same message: “Russia hacked America”. This would give credibility to the notorious leaks and rumors, and in turn a forcible argument to launch an impeachment process.
Allan Lichtman, who wrote the “13 Keys to the White House”, highlighting the system of faultlessly predicting the popular-vote result for the US presidential elections, has also predicted the impeachment of Donald Trump. According to Lichtman, Trump could provoke the impeachment either by doing something that endangers national security, or because it helps his pocketbook”, he said in his early November’s interview with The Washington Post. Now it is clear what can be a strong reason to oust Trump from the Oval Office before he completes a term.
It is clear that Russia’s general excitement over Donald Trump and unhealthy and unusual interest in the election process was odd and looked suspicious to the Americans and their allies. The scandals over the alleged hacking by Russia, resembling waves superseding each other in the recent 160 days since the name of the president-elect was announced, get more intense. The media war that is often running into absurdity negatively influences the general climate. The irresponsibility of the media for what they are posting, lack of fact checking, the chance for exclusives and leaks which can bring them more traffic, plunge us deeper into the post-truth epoch and make the media a dangerous instrument, destabilizing the world.
The notorious report entitled “Assessing Russian Activities and Intentions in Recent US Elections”, that is “a declassified version of a highly classified assessment”, as it was stated in the document, left the public perplexed. A supposed Russian expert, no matter their political affiliation, denied themselves the opportunity to belittle the allegations made in the text, while claiming to cite evidence, prepared by the US intelligence agencies that enjoy an overall budget of about $60 bln. Some claims in the report, including “Russia used trolls as well as RT as part of its influence efforts to denigrate Secretary Clinton»”, is the least you can expect from a paper produced by the intelligence agencies. Does it mean Russian trolls are more efficient than the whole US intelligence service and the propaganda machine stuffed with hundreds billions of dollars? Do they claim that Russia also wrote, by itself, those e-mails that created scandal and undermined the chance of Clinton to take the Oval Office? This is a really awkward logic of modern day, that if there is no leaked data about the crime - there is no crime. Maybe Russia should be blamed for the un-preparedness of the Democratic camp for cyberattacks? Do they really under-stand what they are saying? The ratings on the popularity of RT compared to the leading US channels, show that the only segment where RT are ahead is on YouTube. In the others RT is drastically trailing.
 How big is RT?
Do the authors of the report really suggest that RT has outperformed the whole US propaganda machine, CIA, FBI and all the services with just YouTube? Demonization of Simonyan and Kiselyev, together with RT and a very low level Sputnik channel, look awkward and clumsy to those who know the real state of affairs and can carry out a balanced evaluation of these media outlets’ work.
The report shared by BuzzFeed and previously leaked on anonymous popular fo-rum 4chan, and finally presented as a leak by the reliable intelligence source, was another reason for astonishment. Questions were immediately raised by the source and the quality of the “leaked” paper, as it does not withstand any analysis and criticism. Then for any person who knows the functions of the people mentioned in the document and their roles, most of what has been said as “facts” are extremely absurd.
For example Peskov, spokesman to Putin, who was - according to the leaked document - collecting compromising materials against President Elect Trump. It is hard to explain to the people not familiar with the subject how extremely insane these claims are looking. But they really are. Such mistakes are awkward, they were purported to be serious intelligence documents. It was no surprise that on Wednesday the US intelligence community rejected its implication in this report and the text appeared to have been prepared by the private company.
It is clear that Russia’s general excitement over Donald Trump and unhealthy and unusual interest in the election process was odd and looked suspicious to the Americans and their allies. But the reasons are very simple. This unusual interest is both on the general citizen level, as well as on the governmental one. Russia-US relations reached their lowest point in history since the end of the 1980s. Russia and Russians themselves are emotionally tired of tensions. Russia wants to have someone in the White House with whom it would be possible to make a dialogue and to take all of us further from the dangerous brink. Because the gen-eral panic and the ongoing sustainably fueling the crisis is artificially created, both on the US-Russia bilateral and Russia- West‘s general track. The current situation and its manifestations (like those dubious reports and leakages) are be-coming strong proof of the existing and avowed extreme collapse in Russian studies in the US and extreme lack of good specialists on Russia in general.
Furthermore, the ongoing hysteria over the notorious “Russia has hacked Ameri-ca” story first of all is destructive for the US itself, as the artificially created tur-bulence makes the US vulnerable, weakening it from the inside.
The US is running after its tail in its fight against Russia. The deeper the US political establishment, decision making circles, intelligence, media and the rest plunge in their own imaginary battle with Moscow - the further they are from reality, not even mentioning absurdity of their own statements and maneuvers and the loss of the ability to control the situation they have mastered. The artificially created and fueled fear closes the ears of the mind.
There is no better fighting tactics than waiting for the moment when your rival defeats itself. And if Russia implements these tactics, so it is just being inspired by the US itself and its behaviors. And I think, it's relevant to remember the quote of Napoleon here: “I have destroyed the enemy merely by marches.” So…Russia is just marching...

In Paris, grappling with Palestine
Fawaz Turki/Al Arabiya/January 14/17
It will not, of course, be an event comparable in range to the Paris Peace Conference in January 1919, whose end result was the emergence of a new world order, and at whose venue in Versailles then American president Woodrow Wilson promoted his Fourteen Points, that included self-determination for the “subjugated peoples.”
Rather, the one we have in mind, The Paris Peace Conference on the Middle East, to be held this Sunday in the City of Lights - bringing together more than 70 representatives of different countries and international organizations - will address itself to the issue of what to do about an implacable military occupation in Palestine that will mark its 50th anniversary next June, an occupation during which Palestinians have found themselves sinking deeper and deeper into despair, as they watched their ancestral land colonized, their national dignity assaulted and their right to freedom curtailed.
So expect no binding resolutions that will compel Israel to abide by international law, but expect statements of support for the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to statehood, freedom and independence. Attending the conference will be outgoing American Secretary of State John Kerry, the very man who found himself in the middle of a major kerfuffle when, with less than a month left in office, he delivered a speech on December 28 castigating Israel - and in no uncertain terms - for its occupation practices.
Palestinians are by now weary of peace conferences, which are cold comfort to a long-suffering people who had supped their fill of them, all the way from the 1969 Roger’s Peace Plan to the 1982 Reagan Peace Plan, and from the 1973 Geneva Conference to the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference, all of which turned out to be a lot of hot air
Truth be told, Palestinians are by now weary of peace conferences, which are cold comfort to a long-suffering people who had supped their fill of them, all the way from the 1969 Roger’s Peace Plan to the 1982 Reagan Peace Plan, and from the 1973 Geneva Conference to the 1991 Madrid Peace Conference, all of which turned out to be a lot of hot air.
What can we expect from Paris?
And the Paris Peace Conference may end up being the same, not because the conferees will lack the commitment needed to address the issues, crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s as to who is the injured party in this dispute, but because there is now a new kid on the block, bombastic, vainglorious and strident, who will lead a country that calls itself “leader of the free world” over the next four years, a man who has said upfront that while he’s in office, what Israel wants, Israel will get.
And that is why Benjamin Netanyahu appeared comfortable recently saying that President Obama’s opposition to Israel’s colonies on Palestinian land is “a relic of the past, a last gasp of the past, before the future sets in,” clearly a reference to Inauguration Day on January 20.
Jerusalem? Forget about it, for Trump has promised to move the American embassy there with the impressive ease of a commuter moving from Queens to Manhattan. Washington’s relations with Israel? A piece of cake, for Trump’s pick as US ambassador to Israel is David M. Friedman, a bankruptcy lawyer who knows little about the subtle art of statecraft but is an unabashed supporter of Israel’s colonization project. And America’s envoy to Middle East? That would be Donald Trump’s 35-year-old realtor son-in-law, Jared Kushner, an Orthodox Jew with fiercely pro-Israel sympathies.
Kushner, incidentally, who is a New Yorker, is close friends with Danny Damon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, a man who, after Israeli forces raided the Marmara, one of six civilian ships of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, and killed nine Turkish activists on board in May 2010, famously wrote Turkey’s Prime Minster saying: “We are sorry that due to the IDF’s overcautious behavior, only nine terrorists were killed.”
And he is also friends with Dani Dayan, at one time Israel’s consul general in the Big Apple, who lives in a colony in the West Bank and heads the West Bank colonists’ organization, the Yesha Council, an extremist so extreme in his views that recently Brazil rejected his appointment as Israel’s ambassador in Brazilia, citing his “settler background.” No wonder then that, while Benjamin Netanyahu and Mahmoud Abbas were not expected to take part in the main gathering of the conference on Sunday, but expected to meet on Monday with French President Francois Hollande in order to be briefed on the proceedings, the Palestinian president accepted the invitation and the prime minister of the Israeli entity turned it down. He sniffed:” This conference is a fraud, a Palestinian scam under French auspices, whose goal is to lead to the adoption of anti-Israel positions.”
After all, why should he care? It will all be, he’s convinced, “a relic of the past” after the unhinged Donald Trump - who told reporters at his press conference last Wednesday that he is leader of “a movement like the world has never seen before” - occupies the White House several days from now.

The UAE: Why do moderates love it, but extremists hate it?
Mamdouh AlMuhaini/Al Arabiya/January 14/17
There is a common saying, though a bit exaggerated and inaccurate, that states: A plane that takes you from an Arab country to Europe in five hours, is – in fact – taking you five centuries forward, from the Middle Ages to modern times. When I traveled two years ago from the US to the UAE, nothing changed. I am not exaggerating, I traveled from a first class world to another first class world. The first thing that people notice is the luxurious airports, towering skyscrapers and vast shopping malls. However, what is even more important is the order, strict security and the respect for laws, as well as many other values that build up the pace of a modern and comfortable life. You should not offend others and others should not offend you, out of respect and fear. Nor should you be afraid of encountering hotheads on the streets, harassers in shops, or disheartened bureaucrats in ministries and government departments.
All of the above are the characteristics of a modern state, where the citizens respect the following unwritten rule: I will literally abide by everything that makes me a good citizen and resident. I will maintain order, abide by the law and live in peace, without problems. Law will even support and protect those whom, we sometimes believe, are marginalized and without any support. Once, a taxi driver complained that a customer hit him after a disagreement about 7 AED but he later proudly told me: "But he [the customer] paid 7,000 AED in court for hitting me, in addition to spending a few days in prison.”
The UAE also offers a civilized image of tolerance, human diversity and individual freedoms. It’s not just about the bright lights all around you, but one can feel the peace and appeasement. You can see an array of different races, colors and religions, all living in harmony. There is a school near my apartment, where you can find students of more than 83 nationalities, coming from different parts of the world. You can see Scandinavian, Nepalese, Egyptian and Asian faces roaming the markets and the streets. In other Arab countries, they would ask you irritating labelling questions: Where are you from? What are your family’s roots and religious identity? They make you gradually feel smaller, you go from feeling like a free human being to a mere sample in a social and sectarian museum. In the UAE, people have gotten used to, as in developed countries, minding their own business without asking personal questions. People have the right to escape themselves and enjoy the blissful feeling of individual freedom that does not offend others. They are also entitled to merge and melt in the new world and the present moment, disregarding the restraints of the past. The UAE offers a civilized image of tolerance, human diversity and individual freedoms
 Extremist hate
Despite all the success, peace of mind, respect towards the citizens and residents in the Emirates, extremists and instigators are waging a constant verbal war against the UAE. This is not surprising for those who are used to using indecent language, but in my opinion, there are five main reasons that would lead them to do so. It is important to mention and be aware of these reasons. First, the political realist and wise approach that supports moderation, but is widely hated by extremists who advocate chaos and revolution. The second is that the UAE has turned into a model for prosperity, which is against their political project that seeks to remind people of the futile experiments of repressive regimes, from Saddam to Qaddafi. The third is that the UAE relies on development and opening up on the economic level. As for the extremists’ economic model, it is based on totalitarian ideologies and emotional speeches. The fourth reason is tolerance, coexistence and the love of life and the arts, which are in severe contrast with their doctrine that is based on all kind of hatred and reminding people of death. The fifth is that the UAE has prevented the spread of hatred and intolerance from getting into its public speech, by preventing these advocates and theoreticians from broadcasting them inside UAE territories, in the media in and schools. This is a wise step because the past and present have taught us that this infiltration will lead to the disruption of development and peace. These are the reasons that push extremists to hate the Emirates, and at the same time, the reasons why moderate people love it. There is also another reason that pushes those who live in the UAE to love it, which is the generosity and respect that links them to modern world, without having to travel thousands of miles.
